New EPA rules target diesel train and ship emissions
LA is seen by some here as a competitor west coast gateway. It seems to me that many people there would be quite pleased if we took some more the polltuing ships and trains away from their area. They like polluted air about as much as we do.

Large, ocean-going vessels are linked to about 800 premature deaths in the region each year. More than 40% of all retail goods shipped to the U.S. come through the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
The hope for us is that we will follow suit to ensure that the we get the benefit from the new technologies that will now get built into locomotives and tugs. Otherwise what will happen is that our operators will just shift the old equipment up here. Railway locomotives in particular have very long lives and many in daily service here have been around in one shape or form since the 1950s. Of course, they have been rebuilt and refurbished in the meantime. Even the cleanest Green Goats are not entirely new.

I am not to imformed as to these emission levels –but I did read a story about GLOBAL DIMMING after 911 when air travel stopped all over the world for a week –temperatures around the world at all reporting stations, reported an increase in temperature—-thus a study was conducted, so what we have is 2 forces at work–1 greenhouse gasses(pollution ) are warming the earth- 2 all the jets zooming around the higher altitudes ( 10000 are in the air at one time or more especially during peak travel times .christmas -easter etc ) these jets are leaving a haze over the world blocking out the sun -thus cooling the earth –so now science has come to the conclusion that if all air travel was stopped , the earth would heat up like an oven turned on broil! What a sick irony here we are filling the world with greenhouse gasses heatingup the earth- but if we keep DIMMING the sun we can hold the world temperatue in check! THE SCARIEST PART OF THIS SCENARIO,I CAN PICTURE IN MY MIND -A GREENHOUSE GAS LADEN PLANET ,SHADOWED BY A DARK GREY MAN-MADE CLOUD —I have seen these scenes in hollywood movies- might be a good century for tanning salons!
