Thoughts about the relationships between transport and the urban area it serves

Another piece of good news from the south

While counting was not yet complete when this story made the Seattle Times, it looks like a proposition to extend Sound Transit will pass.

Proposition 1 would impose a sales tax increase of .5 percent, a nickel per $10, to pay for a plan Sound Transit estimates at $22.8 billion. It would expand light rail to Bellevue, Lynnwood and Federal Way.

As of early Wednesday, the measure was drawing 58.6 percent support in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties, including 61.9 percent in King County. The weakest support was 51 percent in Pierce County, where counting was delayed by a ranked choice voting system for local offices.

Thanks to Richard Campbell for the heads up, but I had to go get the link myself. And because of that I now also know that

Meanwhile, I-985, which experts said would have slowed express transit buses, lost big. The measure sought to create a state congestion-relief account and open carpool lanes to general traffic in off-peak hours.

What a shame that here in BC we do not get a vote on transit or highway expansions

  1. It makes sense that the measure to open car pool lanes would lose mathematically. i.e. those who benefit from the carpool lanes remaining exclusive (transit riders and carpoolers) would outnumber those who would benefit from opening up the carpool lanes (single occupant drivers) – even if they occupy fewer vehilces. I suppose that highlights the carrying capacity of transit (and carpools).
