Thoughts about the relationships between transport and the urban area it serves

#19 to Metrotown at Stanley Park
#19 leaving Stanley Park

Just a normal day in paradise – with times from the friendly systems that now track my movements

car2go from Yew at Nanton to the Aquatic Centre, English Bay (4.9km)

Depart 11:40am Arrive 11:54am

Bus from Stanley Park – after ten minutes wait at the terminus

2:26pm 19 to Ganville Street

2:54pm 16 to Nanton arrive 3:20pm (8.35km)

Despite heavy traffic on Georgia, the #19 made good time as it ran for most of the time as SORRY BUS FULL. The bus was a diesel, not a trolley, and was running a short turn to Main Street.

The wait on Granville Street seemed long as the Transit app kept reporting “real time” expected departure times that got updated intermittently.

I have not been using car2go much recently as there was often no car available when I wanted one. They sent me a rather plaintive email to tempt me back so the trip downtown was actually free.

Not that I was in a hurry or anything but I think I am going to be looking for car2go more often.

Here is the text of an email I just received from the company that used to be known as car2go

It’s with a heavy heart that we must share that our last day of SHARE NOW service in North America, which includes the Vancouver area, will be February 29, 2020.

This decision was made based on two extremely complicated realities. The first being the volatile state of the global mobility landscape, and the second being the rising infrastructure complexities facing North American transportation today and the associated costs needed to sustain operations here. Ultimately, we are not in a position to commit to the level of investment necessary to make the North American market successful.

We want to say thank you to our customers, the City of Vancouver and the City of North Vancouver, who have supported us since we launched in the market in 2011. We are saddened by this decision and deeply apologize for the inconvenience this will cause you when service ends.

What does this mean for your account?
    ● The last date you will be able to start a trip will be February 29, 2020, with all trips ending no later than 11:59 pm PT that same day. Please note that you may find fewer vehicles available as we approach that date.
    ● Since current accounts will remain active and can be used until February 29, 2020, SHARE NOW encourages customers to use any remaining credits as soon as they are able to do so.

For any questions or concerns, please contact us at hello.canada@share-now.com.
