Inter-regional Transit

Last night I attended the second meeting of the Select Committee on InteRegional Transportation in Abbotsford. We talked about buses. While I tried to establish early on that we were supposed to concentrate on the “inter-regional” bit inevtably we talked about the lack of transit in Abbotsford, and hence its very low ridership. The City is well behind others of its size in BC in terms of the size of its bus fleet. It would need roughly four times as many buses to come up to the standard of service in somewhere like Kamloops or Kelowna.

A recent innovation has been a new route which crosses the GVTA boundary into Langley, known as the “Aldergrove Connector”. Over two weeks in March of this year it carried a total of 172 people. 14 a day.

The news that surprised me and I would love to read some explanation for is that the bus from Abbotsford is not allowed to use the same bus stop as its connecting service(s) in Aldergrove. Apparently this is something to do with the fact that CMBC and Abbotsford/Mission transit have different unions! Will somebody please explain what on earth this has to do with providing a transit service? I would especially like to hear from someone who is a member of either union to explain their behaviour.
